Saudi Readymix Supplies Specialty

Heavy Weight Concrete for Nuclear Radiation Treatment Room at Dammam University Hospital

Saudi Readymix completes the second phase of pouring Heavy Weight Concrete (HWC) with low heat of hydration (heat from the reaction of water and cement) for a nuclear radiation treatment room at Dammam University Hospital. Heavy Weight concrete is used for radiation shielding in medical or nuclear applications. In this particular case, Saudi Readymix used iron based slag as the coarse aggregate, for the added weight and shielding effect, and fly ash to achieve the low heat of hydration. The room's walls required a pour for thicknesses from 1.0 meters to 2.5 meters.

"This concrete is among several types of specialty concretes that we offer and have provided to various projects across the Kingdom," said Mr. Redwan Hameed, Technical Director at Saudi Readymix. "With challenging projects such as this one, project engineers have to ensure that they are using the right concrete solutions to meet the performance requirements of their projects. We have come across many projects in the Kingdom where the incorrect type of concrete has been specified or better concrete solutions exist."

Saudi Readymix has introduced and supplied unconventional concretes such as self-compacting concrete, 'green' concrete, high temperature resistant concrete, underwater concrete, high strength concrete, and high durability concrete, among many others, as solutions to various projects in the country.

Saudi Readymix is the leading producer and supplier of concrete in the Kingdom. The Company employs over 3,300 employees, operates 33 concrete factories, and manages regional and central laboratories that develop unique mix designs and perform routine testing and analysis on concrete products.
